Collective Memory - 2020 Edition
Be honest - don't you remember?
Do people not remember just four (4) years ago? In Spring and Summer of 2020, when Donald Trump was President of the United States of America, we were all under lockdown, scrambling to deal with a pandemic. I was forced to teach my classes virtually in Spring and Summer 2020 (during Spring, I was given about ten days advanced notice). Did anyone learn anything in those classes? I’d like to think so, but a significant number didn’t. Look at the calendar - four years ago. Is our collective memory that bad? Who was President? Donald Trump was. Don’t you remember he was spending more time chasing theories about where COVID-19 had come from instead of dealing with the clear and present danger right in front of his eyes?
Don’t you remember November 2020? The election was free and fair. Joe Biden got considerably more popular and electoral votes than Donald Trump, 303 to 235. The ONLY reason people had doubts that the election had been fair was Donald Trump. He had planted the seeds of “If I lose, the election was rigged” long before November. Before 2020, election fairness was an issue, but not a big one. REMEMBER? It’s not a matter of getting to the bottom of what happened in the 2020 election. Donald Trump lost.
Don’t you remember January 6, 2021? That was 3 and a half years ago. Don’t you remember how you felt that day as the Capitol was stormed by angry protesters (not “tourists”)? Protestors ran roughshod in the Capitol. They took over the House and Senate chambers and smeared feces around the building as Representatives and Senators fled. House and Senate Offices were vandalized. A protester was killed and several police officers died as a result. If this had occurred on any other day, how would you have felt? REMEMBER?
